NC Football Great Dies

Posted: Sunday, December 27, 2009 at 03:59

The entire Northeast Catholic Football Community is saddened by the loss of former player, Marty Qualtieri.  Mr Qualtieri led the Falcons to the PCL and City championship in 1956.  Marty led an incredible life and the Northeast Catholic Community is a better one for having him part of it.  You will be missed.

Falcons Defeat Pioneers in Classic Game!

Posted: Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at 09:06

If the 2009 Turkey Bowl was indeed the final installment in the historic North Catholic-Frankford rivalry, it certainly was a fitting end.

In a game in which the lead changed 3 times in just the final 3 minutes, the Falcons defeated the Pioneers, 28-22, before a crowd estimated by some to be 10,000 strong. The game was played at LaSalle University's McCarthy Stadium to accommodate the anticipated huge audience.

The game was decided with just 13 seconds remaining when QB Anthony Reid (19-28, 212 yards, 2TD passing) found RB Eugene Byrd (31 carries for 149 yards; 5 receptions for 35 yards and 1 TD receiving) over the middle for a score.

P/K John McCarthy added the extra point for the final margin. On the day, John averaged 39 yards per punt, 50 yards per kickoff with two touchbacks, and added 2 extra points. Julian Huggins and David Sherman each added 5 receptions to keep the chains moving all morning.

Defensively the Falcons played a determined second half, with several key stops. Among the defensive leaders were LB David D. Williams with 10 tackles, LB Robert Butler with 6 tackles and DE Jack Schanz with 5 stops.

The game was a great one played before an awesome crowd, and both schools and teams should be proud of themselves!
